ABOUT PERSONAL VAPORISERS (E-CIGS)
What is a Personal Vaporizer (Electronic Cigarette)?
A personal vaporiser (electronic cigarette) is a battery-powered device that provides a flavoured vapour that can also contain nicotine, by way of atomising a solution of e-liquid. It is an alternative to smoked tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. These devices may be referred to by different terms by different companies and end-users. Among those terms are Electronic Cigarettes (E-Cigs), Electronic Smoking Device, Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS), Personal Vaporiser (PV), Nicotine Vaporiser, E-Fag, and more lately Mods, subs, atty's, drippers and Advanced Personal Vaporisers (APV’s).
What are the parts of a Personal Vaporiser?
Generally, a PV will come with three parts.
- A power source (usually a rechargeable battery or a cable that draws power from a USB port)
- An atomizer or coil head (the part containing the heating element and wick)
- A cartridge or tank (the part containing the e-liquid)
Note: Some e-cigs combine the atomizer and cartridge into one piece. These are generally referred to as “cartomizers”.
The modern version of an atomizer is the clearomiser, where a replaceable coil is fitted in a Tank. The tank feeds juice to the coil and creates the vapour.
ABOUT JUICE (E-LIQUID)
E-liquid is typically comprised of four main ingredients: propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerine (VG), flavouring and if required, nicotine. PG is one of the base ingredients that form e-liquid; this is what provides you with that deliciously strong throat hit. PG is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA, and has been used in a variety of household items, food, skincare and health products for over 50 years. PG has little to no taste and therefore won’t affect flavoured e-liquid. It’s a relatively thin liquid which can prolong the life of your coil. However, it’s best when combined with other ingredients like VG to give a better-rounded vaping experience. In the rare case that someone is allergic to propylene glycol, e-liquids containing VG are the perfect substitute.
VG is another commonly used substance in the e-liquid found in e cigs. VG is a natural ingredient derived from plants and, like PG, is often contained in many household products like lotions, shampoos, toothpastes, pet foods, medications, bakery items and more. VG boasts a much thicker viscosity than PG. It can have a mildly sweet taste, so it is often blended with PG in e-liquid to accommodate the full flavours of E-juice. Because of its dense properties, VG is known for the thick vapour it produces; PG is a thinner substance and produces a more smooth kind of vapour. While many vape fans would prefer to have an e-liquid made exclusively from VG, the fluid is so thick that it can shorten the life span of your coil if not diluted with propylene glycol. That’s why both ingredients are used in e-liquids.
Our e-liquids do not contain any nicotine. It is illegal to sell or supply nicotine in Australia. You can purchase nicotine for personal use from overseas and import it, they will allow you 3 months’ supply in most states. A prescription is needed to posses nicotine in Australia. It is recommended that you check local laws as legislation's are continually changing with laws being introduced due to “knee-jerk” reactions by several State legislators. An excellent nicotine supplier is Mixology Vapes in New Zealand.
